Supporting Developers with Design

July 22nd, 2010

Every small web design firm has to go through some growing pains. Growing pains like networking. Through my countless smiles and handshakes I have discovered that an overwhelming amount of attendees at web events are developers. Everywhere I go it like, “so what do you do?”, “Oh, I’m a developer”. I like it because I’m one of the only designers and they all seem to need designers.

Because of this I have intentionally started to reach out to this crowd. We have even expanded our reseller program to include developers who allow us to manage the creative phase of their projects. A friend of mine, Gerard Sychay has invited me to join his Cincinnati Coworks office space. This is a great place and is full of developers because Gerard is a developer and probably reached out to other developers. He would like to get people from other disciplines like PR, Social-media or copy writers to join in the fun. I love the co-working concept where professionals in various but supporting disciplines go in together and rent office space. It’s also a great way to network, especially when they need a web designer in-house.

Even better could be the camaraderie and support you get from the other members. So many small businesses need the mental support and cheer-leading from their peers. Cincinnati Coworks is a place where that can happen. I anyone is interested in supporting Gerard in his new venture and renting some space feel free to contact him. There are two full-time office spaces available and a few part-time ones too. If you want you can even just stop in for a day or two and start working, I’ll be there Tuesday.

The real reasons people click

July 18th, 2010

I took a trip to Indianapolis to just get into some new surrounding for a change. It was a chance to visit the new attraction to their downtown area since my last visit. It was the weekend, and many of the stores were open including Borders Books. I was browsing the books on web design and business development when a new title caught my eye, Neuro Web Design, What makes them click. I scanned through the book and what I found was very interesting. I usually browse the bookstores for what I want, take a picture with the iPhone and buy them later on Amazon. This time was different, I just had to have this book.

On the way home my girlfriend read some of the book to keep us entertained and she just couldn’t put it down. She is just as excited about the web as I am but more the social media space. It didn’t matter because this book is for everyone in the digital realm. When I got home I started reading more and taking notes as I went along. I was thinking about how I would apply the concepts in this book to all of the websites I design going forward.

Some of the concepts were around the importance of testimonials on a site and how to do them the right way. The right way being able to trigger subconscious responses in the users mind that will lead them to trust your service. Another idea is how bar graphs and charts can give people the feeling that they are logically choosing your service when in fact their subconscious mind is making all the decisions.

There is a great chapter on giving away things on your site for free! They use Zappos as an example since they have free shipping on your order and anything you return. When you give things away it conjures feelings in the minds of users that they now owe you something and should return the favor. This feeling could lead to additional purchases than they originally intended or simply increased loyalty. This gift giving concept can even apply to things like forms. When asking someone for their personal information, consider giving away valuable content first. In a study conducted by researchers, they found that users were twice as likely to fill out forms when receiving valuable information first rather than forcing them to fill out a form to get the information.

The useful information goes on and on. I would highly recommend picking up a copy of this book. It’s a short read and something you can pass around to colleagues.
